M.I.A. Announces ‘Mata,’ Her First Album In Five Years

English rapper and record producer M.I.A has announced a new full-length studio album called “Mata,” with an expected release in 2021.

The 46-year-old announced the upcoming album with a short video post via her social media account on Monday.

The 20-second clip shows the rapper (with a whiteboard — which artistes commonly use to list and select songs that will make it to an upcoming project — hung to the wall) saying; “To reflect who I am, what we wanna build, I’m proud to announce, starting today, my L.P. is now Mata.”

Mata will be M.I.A.’s sixth full-length studio album with “A.I.M.,” released on 9 September 2016 — being her most recent album.

Quick Background

If you read a lot about new music on the Web, the odds are pretty good that, at some point between the September 2004 release of “Galang” and the March 2005 release of Arular, you were struck with the urge to turn your computer off or maybe even heave it out of a nearby window.

If you don’t read a lot about new music on the Web, the preceding sentence indicates how bewildering and draining the chatter about M.I.A. became.

Arular, M.I.A.’s first album, leaked well before its official release, allowing journalists and downloaders plenty of time to dissect it and bat ideas back and forth — taking in the sounds, words, and absolutely all of the context — before average music fans were able to develop their own opinions.

Recent — The Upcoming Album

Born Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, M.I.A launched a Patreon page on 31 January 2020 to fund new music, saying that her new album is “nearly finished.”

On 22 March 2020, M.I.A. released “OHMNI 202091,” her first song in three years, and suggested that a new record would arrive the same year. IN September, she shared a standalone song titled “CTRL” on her website.

M.I.A was featured alongside Young Thug on the single “Franchise” by rapper Travis Scott, released on 25 September 2020. The song debuted at number-one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, earning M.I.A. her first number-one single on the chart.
